The former New Hampshire native came from humble beginnings, growing up in a small town where neighbors were treated like family, and everyone was greeted with respect. Attorney Merchant comes from a long line of military veterans; therefore, she is no stranger to hard work, respect and the ability to persevere despite whatever circumstances may come her way. April lost her father, as well as many of her family members at a young age. She witnessed firsthand how illness, trauma, death, and disability can wreak havoc that can tear families apart.
Attorney Merchant prides herself on her ability to build long term relationships with her clients. Her wide range of personal experience and knowledge allows her to empathize with people who are in midst of or planning for difficult life situations. This experience also allows her to provide just the right balance of guidance and objective advocacy for her clients.
Attorney Merchant spent the first twenty years of her career working full time while attending higher education courses. She was the first class to graduate from the American Bar Association accredited New Hampshire Technical Institute’s Paralegal Studies Associate Degree program. She was so impressed by the professors and the quality of education she received she did not hesitate to be one of the founding members of the American Bar Association Advisory Committee that applied for and maintained NHTI’s status as the first and only ABA accredited paralegal program in New Hampshire. Upon her graduation from law school, she was honored to be asked to join NHTI as part of their adjunct faculty in the paralegal program.
Attorney Merchant enjoys giving back to the community through volunteer work as well as by advocacy in her community. Near her hometown in New Hampshire she volunteered at food pantries, animal shelters, and nursing homes. She enjoyed playing cribbage with seniors at nursing homes and community centers. In her former role as co-vice president and treasurer of The Women’s Club of Concord she was able to provide support to women who were struggling from financial hardship and physical abuse. She also served as treasurer and past president of the Paralegal Association of New Hampshire and worked with and assisted the founding members of the Collaborative Law Alliance of New Hampshire.
Attorney Merchant earned her JD at Suffolk University Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance with a minor in International Business from Southern New Hampshire University as well as an Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies from New Hampshire Technical Institute. She is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Connecticut Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in Connecticut State Court and the U.S. District Court of Connecticut.
Attorney Merchant’s strong work ethic is balanced by the belief that one should play hard as well. She spent many years playing girl’s indoor soccer and gained an orange belt in Thai kickboxing. She is extremely passionate about dance and currently trains for Latin and Ballroom dancing in local competitions and performances.
