🏡 Why Home Care May Be Better (When Possible)
More affordable than nursing homes, especially when care needs are not yet 24/7
Allows loved ones to stay in familiar surroundings
Better quality of life and personalized attention
May delay or even prevent the need for institutional care
đź’ˇ Medicaid and Home Care in Connecticut
Connecticut offers a program called the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE), which provides in-home care services paid by Medicaid, including:
Personal care attendants
Adult day health services
Homemaker assistance
Meals, transportation, and more
âś… CHCPE Eligibility
Age 65+
Functional need for care (but not necessarily requiring full-time nursing home care)
Income limit: ~$2,829/month for individuals (same as long-term care Medicaid)
Asset limit: $1,600 (individual) for Medicaid-funded services, higher for state-funded levels
CHCPE has multiple “tiers” of service depending on income/assets — some are Medicaid-funded, others are state-funded with sliding-scale co-pays.
